Our hybrid assembly approach to silicon-nitride based photonic integrated circuits is applied in our narrow-linewidth tunable laser. This laser has an ultra-narrow linewidth and is tunable over a the whole C-band. The combination of wavelength accuracy with tunability makes this external cavity laser an unique laser system.
Narrow linewidth laser at the wavelength range around 1550nm are widely used in telecom systems, OTDR systems and fiber bragg sensing systems.
The main concept follows from our hybrid assembly approach, that combines low- loss silicon-nitride PIC with active gain PICs. For the this tunable laser a gain section PIC in InP technology is hybridly attached to a tunable reflector PIC creating an external cavity laser. The gain section creates the first mirror and the necessary gain, the silicon-nitride based TriPleX™ PIC acts as a tunable wavelength dependent mirror.

The tunable laser is well suited for customization. Additional application specific functions are integrated on the same TriPleX™ PIC to create custom features. For your application specific design the laser as a building block is also available in the Multi Project Wafer (MPW) Process Design Kit (PDK) of LioniX International. And since the TriPleX works from 405 to 2350nm the concept is well adaptable to other applications, requiring different wavelengths bands.
